In a groundbreaking achievement for the Indian Private space sector, a space startup named Agnikul Cosmos has successfully launched Agnibaan - SOrTeD, the world's first rocket powered by a fully 3D-printed engine. The launch took place from India's first-ever privately-developed launchpad, "Dhanush,"also established by Agnikul at Sriharikota.
On May 30, 2024, Agnikul Cosmos achieved a historic milestone when their Agnibaan SOrTeD (Sub-Orbital Technology Demonstrator) lifted off at 7:15 a.m. Local time. This mission marked several significant firsts:
Private Launchpad: Agnibaan SOrTeD is the first rocket to use a private launchpad set up by a startup in India. The launchpad, named "Dhanush,"is located at Sriharikota, the country's only operational spaceport.
3D-Printed Rocket Engine: Agnikul's achievement lies in its fully 3D-printed rocket engine. Unlike traditional manufacturing processes where engine parts are manufactured separately and assembled later, Agnikul's approach significantly reduces launch costs and assembly time. The company aims to offer affordable launch services for small satellites.
Semi-Cryogenic Engine: Agnibaan SOrTeD also demonstrated India's first semi-cryogenic engine, called Agnilet. This engine uses sub-cooled oxygen as fuel, showcasing the company's innovation in propulsion technology.
"We are proud to present India’s first semi-cryo rocket engine, which is also the world’s most integrated single-shot 3D-printed piece. It signals the ability to rapidly assemble rockets that is unparalleled," said Prof Satyanarayanan R Chakravarthy, founding advisor of Agnikul Cosmos and head of the National Centre for Combustion Research and Development at IIT Madras.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) congratulated Agnikul on this achievement, recognizing it as a major milestone. The controlled flight of a semi-cryogenic liquid engine realized through additive manufacturing represents a significant leap in space technology.
The Future of Agnikul
As Agnikul Cosmos continues its journey, we can expect further innovations and breakthroughs. Their commitment to advancing space technology and providing cost-effective launch solutions bodes well for India's growing presence in the global space industry.
