Starlink inks partnership with WestJet and TELUS to Revolutionize In-Flight Internet on 1000 Commercial Planes

In a groundbreaking partnership, WestJet and TELUS have announced plans to provide fast and free internet on WestJet aircraft, powered by Starlink's cutting-edge technology. This strategic partnership marks a significant leap forward in in-flight connectivity, setting a new standard in the Canadian airline industry.

Starting before the end of 2024, WestJet will begin installing Starlink's technology on its modern narrowbody fleet, with plans to complete the upgrade by the end of 2025. All wide-body aircraft are expected to be upgraded by the end of 2026. This will make WestJet the largest North American and first commercial Boeing 737 airline to offer in-flight connectivity powered by Starlink.

With Starlink's best-in-class technology platform, which includes the world's largest satellite constellation, guests will be able to live-stream videos or online game directly from their devices, enjoying high-speed, low-latency internet as if they were at home. This new platform will be exclusively available to WestJet Rewards members free of charge, thanks to TELUS.

But that's not all - Starlink is also making waves in the maritime industry, partnering with leading cruise lines like Carnival Corporation to provide connectivity at sea. Starting in 2025, Starlink will begin rolling out its technology on cruise ships, enabling passengers to stay connected with friends and family back on land. This move is expected to revolutionize the cruise industry, providing unparalleled internet access to passengers in even the most remote ocean locations. Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest cruise company, has already completed the roll-out of SpaceX’s Starlink across its entire global fleet. All 90-plus ships in Carnival Corporation’s portfolio of world-class cruise brands now have access to Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency global internet connectivity.

"We are thrilled to partner with TELUS to bring this revolutionary in-flight connectivity to our guests," said John Weatherill, WestJet Group Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer. "And with our expansion into the maritime industry, we are excited to bring the same level of connectivity to cruise ship passengers, further solidifying our position as a leader in the field."

Zainul Mawji, Executive Vice-president and President, TELUS Consumer Solutions, added, "This partnership marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in in-flight connectivity and entertainment. We are committed to bringing more value to WestJet Rewards members and TELUS customers, whether they are on the ground, in the air, or at sea."

Jason Fritch, SpaceX's Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales, noted, "With over 1,000 aircraft committed to Starlink worldwide, and a growing presence in the maritime industry, high-speed, low-latency internet is the future of connectivity. We are excited to work with WestJet and leading cruise lines to bring this technology to their guests in the coming months."
