Kennedy Space Center, FL – Maxar Intelligence has confirmed the successful deployment of its fifth and sixth WorldView Legion satellites, launched earlier today aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center. The satellites, now in mid-inclination orbit, mark a major milestone in the company’s mission to enhance geospatial intelligence capabilities.

With this latest launch, Maxar’s constellation now includes seven satellites capable of capturing ultra-high-resolution 30 cm-class imagery, significantly increasing the company’s ability to monitor the planet with unprecedented detail. Once the full WorldView Legion fleet is operational, Maxar will be able to collect over 6 million square kilometers of Earth imagery per day, including up to 3.6 million square kilometers at 30 cm resolution.
The expanded satellite network will support a wide range of applications, including:
-Enhanced mission planning through increased image collection capacity.
-Real-time monitoring for emergency response, maritime surveillance, and government operations.
-More accurate basemaps and 3D maps for commercial and telecommunications applications.
-Global-scale insights to drive data-driven decision-making.
“This milestone sets Maxar apart in the geospatial industry, thanks to the dedication and expertise of our teams over the years,” said Dan Smoot, CEO of Maxar Intelligence. “But this is just the beginning. Our expanded capacity allows us to capture more timely data across more locations, fueling the industry’s most advanced 2D and 3D geospatial content.”
Smoot emphasized that combining this enhanced satellite capability with AI-powered technologies will provide near real-time intelligence for both government and commercial users, empowering them to make critical, time-sensitive decisions with confidence.
The WorldView Legion satellites are designed to enhance Maxar’s capabilities through:
-Extended image collection from dawn to dusk, leveraging both mid-inclination and sun-synchronous orbits.
-Up to 15 revisits per day for some locations, improving tracking for site monitoring and change detection.
The first two WorldView Legion satellites launched in May 2024, followed by the third and fourth in August 2024. All four have been supporting customer missions since late last year.
Built by Maxar Space Systems, the WorldView Legion satellites are the first of the Maxar 500™ series platforms to enter orbit.
“Maxar Space Systems is dedicated to delivering the most advanced commercial Earth observation satellites, ensuring reliability and top-tier performance,” said Chris Johnson, CEO of Maxar Space Systems. “This achievement reflects our commitment to excellence and innovation in satellite manufacturing.”
